Summer is the perfect time to get outside and get active with your children! Here are some suggestions for getting active this summer!
Children love to move, and there are lots of good reasons for keeping them physically active. Some benefits include: developing strong bones and muscles, improving balance and coordination, maintaining a healthy weight, boosting self confidence and social interactions, and reducing stress. Best of all, being active is a lot of FUN!
Ideally children should get at least 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity. This can be done throughout the day; by walking to school, engaging in active leisure activities at home and school, or by participating in organised sporting activities in the afternoon or at the weekend.
Parents can help their child to be more active by being a good role model and participating in activities themselves. Parents and children can go for walks together in the park, swim at the beach or pool, take a stroll with the dog, or play organised sport. Enrolling children in organised sport, and providing children with toys such as balls, Frisbees, scooters and bicycles are also useful for encouraging active play.
Remember to make sure your child drinks plenty of water when they are physically active or playing sport. Ensure they are well protected from the sun when outdoors, and have appropriate footwear and clothing for being active.
Go ahead, now is the time to plan some active summer fun!
