• Brainstorm together with your child the things to do when mum/dad are away.
  • Rehearse/role play moment of separation, including what happens after mum/dad have left.
  • Give five to ten minute warnings of approaching separation; adjust timing as necessary.
  • Leave without delay, reminding your child of possible things to do at the time of reunion.
  • Monitor/inquire about behaviour after you leave; consider gradual withdrawal, where appropriate.
  • Review your own feelings and behaviours as possible contributors to your child’s separation fears.
  • Pick them up at the promised time!
