Early signs of Dyslexia and Effective Early Intervention

The signs of Dyslexia are evident from a very early age and can be seen before reading and writing are taught. Often parents and professionals want to ‘wait and see’ as they do not want to label young children and they are not confident in how to help at this early stage. But in the meantime children can lose their confidence and start to avoid certain tasks.
This presentation is for parents and professionals who want to know how to begin to intervene as soon as they notice the first warning signs of dyslexia. Helen Trethewey will explore the pre skills that are needed for children to succeed at school and develop secure literacy skills and explain how these can be challenging for dyslexic children. She will look at how to intervene by utilising children’s strengths as well as tackling their weaknesses. There are a huge range of fun activities that can strengthen children’s underlying skills. In addition, dyslexic interventions can be selected that play to a child’s strengths making them more effective. Helen will also present information about dyslexia screeners that are effective from 5 years old onwards.
Helen Trethewey is an experienced Learning Support teacher and Inclusion leader who has worked in the UK, Brussels and Hong Kong. She has worked in Primary school education for 25 years, 18 of which have been in the area of Inclusion. Helen is passionate about the education of Dyslexic students and their early identification. She is keen to share her expertise with professionals and parents and she has recently presented at the Asia Pacific International Schools conference and the SENIA conference in Hong Kong. Helen has a blog called Twice Exceptional which supports parents and educators in better understanding a range of Learning differences and gives information on how to help all children to thrive at school.
